Malaysians In Motion

We are a family of three. Capt Ghani Ishak, 63, Master Mariner and Barrister at Law (Lincolns Inn); Alison Murugesu-Ghani, 39, ex Hotelier and Mum and Adrian Ishak Ghani, 6, Chatterbox and Bundle of Mischief and Fun.

We took off from our home in London on 1 May 2008 in our trusty 4x4 Nissan Patrol, which we fondly call ‘Tuah’ and spent the next 18 months driving through Europe, The Middle East, Africa and the United States of America.

What makes us unique and separates us from other round the world trips are the team members, a family unit with limited experience, having started off when our son was just 3.5 years old, without any backup or support.

We covered more than 65,000 miles, visiting 86 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 45 Countries in 4 Continents, before arriving back in Malaysia, where we now reside.

The Project

To bring a little cheer to the children. We made our dreams come true although everyone told us we were crazy to take off as we did. Our travels have made us more aware of those around us, especially the children, many of whom are living with no dreams, because they are living in the most inaccessible areas, many without basic amenities such as clean running water, electricity and with little or no access to healthcare and proper schools. Sadly, despite Malaysia’s achievements and development, there are still tens of thousands of such children living in urban slums and rural and remote communities.*

We are in the process of seeking sponsorship for a projector, screen and generator and with this equipment; we intend to bring the cinema to children in the most inaccessible areas, such as rural and Orang Asli Villages. We are also trying to source educational shows and cartoons, preferably by local animation companies. Our project is simply to provide some entertainment via cinema to these children. We are not an NGO, we are just a family, who want to reach out to the children. We will be working with volunteer charity workers and NGOs and other groups or individuals who may approach us.
