PETPOSITIVE
Petpositive

The Malaysian Animal-Assisted Therapy for the Disabled and Elderly Association (Petpositive) is the first - and only - nationally registered non-profit Society in the country which uses animals to empower the lives of disabled and elderly persons.

Our mission is groundbreaking. We work with pets. We reach out to all categories of disabled persons.

All handicapped and elderly Malaysians are our target groups. One does not have to be a paying member to receive our services.

Petpositive is actively run by disabled and elderly persons who sit in our committee and supported by healthcare professionals who include specialist doctors, veterinarians, dentists and others.

PETPOSITIVE AT A GLANCE:

WHO WE ARE:

  • A national, non profit charitable society registered in Kuala Lumpur on June 7, 2006.
  • The first and only Society of our kind whose goal is to partner pets with disabled and older Malaysians for positive living.
  • Our Society is run by disabled and elderly persons who actively receive AAT from their pets.
  • Petpositive also receives strong backing from specialists in the medical, rehabilitation, veterinary and other healthcare professions – many of whom also sit in the Executive Committee.

WHAT WE DO:

  • Encourage AAT among disabled and elderly Malaysians to help them achieve a higher quality of life and positive living through animal companionship.
  • Promote love and appreciation for all animals and to ensure that their rights are protected.
  • To be a catalyst in bringing about opportunities, in clinics, hospitals and other places where, the disabled and elderly can have access to AAT.
  • Educate and advise society at large on all matters regarding AAT.
  • Raise funds in order to achieve our abovementioned mission.

WHY WE DO IT:

  • Animals are natural therapists – they reach out farther, deeper, more precisely and effectively than healthcare professionals.
  • They tell you it’s okay to be disabled – and then, stick real close by you when the going gets tough.
  • People with pets generally possess lower and healthier heart rates.
  • Pet owners also live longer and are able to fight off infections and illnesses more successfully.
  • Patting a dog, stroking a cat or bird is much more fun, exciting and life-giving to a patient compared to a stiff and cold thermometer or stethoscope.

HOW WE DO IT:

  • Identify, introduce and assess suitable candidates for AAT and the kind of animal partners to be paired up with: bird, cat, dog, fish or others.
  • Assist in getting our Petpositive Pet Partnership Programme started and see it through over three months.

Our chief goal is to now set up an animal-assisted therapy centre in which we are able to provide an opportunity for the disabled and elderly to encounter and experience the benefits of animal assisted therapy in order for them to lead positive lives.

WHY PETPOSITIVE?

My beloved Mother had a stroke over two years ago and had since then been bedridden. Faiziah, my Sister being the only girl in the family volunteered to take care of Mum with the help of two visiting nurses. Mum’s spirit had been low and her will to fight on had been slowly ebbing as she had always been independent and not being able to be fed orally did not help.

However, about four months ago in December 2007, her world changed for the better by the grace of Allah. A stray kitten came to the flat and had since been a companion to her. She is no longer on liquid diet fed through the tubes and able to take food and her medication orally. Mum is a lot more jovial and will always ask after Noodle, the kitten whenever she is not within sight.

When we came across PETPOSITIVE, we had no doubt about which charity to work with and the bonus: working with my old friend, Capt Karim Russell who is an advisor to the PETPOSITIVE – Ghani
