29th December 2008: Cairo

Adrian was not feeling well this morning and we were quite worried to see him so lethargic. He even asked for Calpol but vomited it out together with the water that Alison gave him. He however did agree to go for breakfast but didn’t eat anything apart from a pinch of bread.  When we went back to the room, Adrian went back to sleep. Alison suspected that it was the side effect of the larium but we couldn’t be sure.

At about noon Adrian woke up and after a couple of hours he was prancing up and down as normal which was a relief to us. By 1430hrs we were out of the hotel on the way to the pyramids. We drove straight to the ticket counter, bought our tickets and then went to the gates and pretended not to understand what the gate keeper was saying and he eventually gave up and let us in without the tickets being checked. We drove right to the top where one could view the city in between the pyramids and wondered where the Sphinx were and was told by the police that we shouldn’t have missed them as they could be seen  on the way in, (depending on which gate one entered the site, which was unknown to us).

On the way down we stopped to take a closer photograph of Tuah and the Pyramids but along came a police officer on a camel to chase us off. He saw the potential of buckshee when asked if we could take photograph him and allowed us to continue. After taking a few snaps it was payment time and whatever I gave was not enough and the policeman went to Alison and asked for more but was unfortunately for him, ignored.

As it was nearing closing time we had to rush and finally we spotted the sphinx on the way out. I managed to get a couple of photos of Alison and Adrian with it in the background. We met one person who didn’t ask for buckshee and he had a camel but was told that Adrian was sick and wouldn’t like to have a ride. He stayed with us explaining that the upper portion of the Pyramids was built with Limestone blocks while the Lower outer portion was granite. He offered to be guest at his house if we wanted to watch the light and sound show of the sphinx but we declined and he gave me his mobile number should we change our mind.

We thought it be a good idea if we drove around for a bit as the traffic was a little easier and had our McDonalds on a bridge overlooking the Nile. The drive took us past all the nice hotels, which we couldn’t afford to stay in, along the banks of the Nile. I was beginning to get used to the traffic when suddenly while making a U turn another car came on the outside and shoved his front end ahead of me. Of course I knocked him with my bumper but amazingly he didn’t stop or even acknowledged the fact.

It was then time to head back to the hotel before I did any serious damage to someone else.
