4th January 2009: Luxor

At breakfast I found another disappointment when Tony suggested that he could specially arrange to make us cooked breakfast, as I could see the other guests all having theirs in boxes. As it turned out I was charged for the omelets we had and at the same time had the packed breakfast served in a plate.  He could have charged me just for the eggs and that wouldn’t cost 21LE. However we live and learn and I was not going to be conned again by Tony’s special treatment.

I had seen the trucks with Tour D’Afrique emblazoned on its side and was determined to find out more before they left. Tony had told me that they were going early in the morning and I got up especially early to make sure I don’t miss the drivers. As it turned out Tony again had given me a lot of bullshit as when they were up and about, the drivers told me that they had to assemble at 1700hrs for the convoy to take them to Cairo.

Apparently, according to them the roads down to Kenya are partially good with the odd length of non-tarmac path. But they were going slow and at times manage only 150kms per day but see no reason why Tuah cannot make much more distance in any one day. Talking to them gave me a lot of confidence for the drive south.

We spent the day tidying up Tuah and the amount of junk that came out ended being put back in him, albeit rearranged. We never seem to be able to get rid of stuff and Tuah always appear to be full.

In the evening we decided to have a good meal out and found an Indian restaurant called a taste of India, sounds familiar?  No doubt the owner who is English must have had permission to use the name of the chain of Indian restaurant but on the other hand there could be no copyright infringement. Regardless, the food was excellent and plentiful.  By sheer luck, the choice of restaurant brought us to a small supermarket also owned by an Englishman where some of the things we needed were available.

On the way back to the campsite we drove around to find our bearings and to see where Kanark Temple was as we had seen where the Luxor Temple was which was  right in the middle of Luxor. We got back to the cold room and slept soundly wit extra blankets found in the cupboard.
