13th January 2009: Aswan to Wadi Halfa

I was up and about at 0015hrs and did some shots of what it looked like on board at that ungodly hour. I tried to take some shots of the deck passengers but it was so dark and I didn’t have the lights for the video camera.  I was beginning to be recognized by the bridge team and was offered tea as I went to the bridge and it felt good to be acknowledged. I was then told that we would pass Abu Simbal at about 0730hrs.

At 0600hrs I was up again and this time on the bridge was given a glass of tea straight away which was nice to have at that time of the morning. As the sun raises those who were up had the opportunity to witness and took pictures of it with the moon still to be seen on the opposite horizon. As we got nearer to Abu Simbal I was asked if I wanted to go to the starboard side of the bridge and got Alison and Adrian up as well. We had an excellent view of Abu Simbal and thank the captain for allowing us to be on the bridge.

Adrian was sitting and playing near Sandra when suddenly there was a loud bang and Sandra was seen lying down with blood oozing out of her skull. Apparently Andrea had bumped her head on the cover of the engine room air intake and got it dislodged from its support and the cover came crashing down. Thank God Adrian was not standing up or Sandra was not sitting up higher, otherwise both could have ended up seriously injured.

The ferry was alongside at about 1200hrs and this time we had to wait for immigration clearance although the passport had been stamped. The immigration officers, who could barely speak English was recording visa numbers and other details in two separate books and wanted an address an Khartoum and not interested in anywhere in between. We just put down c/o the Malaysian Embassy and no further questions asked.
