8th July 2008 - Barn, Romania

Alison got up before me today and I decided to have a lie in but not for long as we had a visitor, Jerry. He has been on the road for 8 years, after retirement and selling all his immovable assets in Holland. (Some people thought we were mad!)

Jerry the wonderer - 8 years on the road

We didn’t get out of the campsite till 1.00 pm unsure if we were returning, and headed for Dracula’s castle. Not expecting too many people we were surprised to see a large number of tourists heading in the same direction. A group stopped by Tuah and asked if we were from KL, as a lady amongst them had been there in 2002. Stalls offering souvenirs lined up the path leading to the castle.

Bran Castle history without the Dracula bit

After parting with 34 Leu, we were allowed in to the castle. Historical facts have no mention of Count Dracula ever living there but the fictional novel has brought attention to the castle and now the municipality is raking in the proceeds. It is a very attractive castle perched on a wooded hill with loads of artifacts on display. Unfortunately rain stopped us enjoying the whole visit.

Regardless, the rain didn’t stop me from bargaining for a T shirt which I found unusual. Adrian was given an unusual probably hand made Romanian toy to remind him of Barn.

Brasov was our next stop but we couldn’t do much other than viewing the city from inside Tuah with the rain belting down. It is an attractive city with some parts modernized and the remaining old structures retained. We thought it better to return to Vampire camping rather than moving ahead to another campsite. On the way we stopped at Rasov but unfortunately the road to the old town perched on top of the hill was being resurfaced and not accessible to vehicles and we gave it a miss. We were welcomed back by Toni and Patrick and of course Jerry who was going to celebrate his birthday the next day.
