9th July 2008 - Barn to Gilau, Romania
Wednesday, 09 July 2008 11:53
The rain woke me up at 7.00 am, and I thought that we were going to be stuck in the tent the rest of the day. Fortunately after an hour it stopped and a lot of campers began to leave including the French group of four 4x4s and gave us the opportunity to break camp. I gave Gerry a lift to the bakeries to get some pastries to celebrate his 67th birthday with. No sooner had we started tucking in on the offerings I was asked to help out a Dutchman who was stuck in the mud with his campervan.

Vampire Camping, Bran - Happy Birthday, Gerry Vampire Camping, Bran - Can you help pull us out of the mud

Gerry the storyteller and birthday boy, Bran

Tuah agreed to help and who am I to object. The campervan was well and truly bogged down with a trailer in tow. Costin a Romanian camper was already on site and being a member of an expedition club had some ideas as to what was needed. A tow rope was attached to Tuah’s sub-frame rather than the towing lug. Soon Tuah was pulling the campervan in his four wheel drive mode.

I had a chat with Costin after the campervan was seen off safely and was promised translation of some of the entries of “clubrv” Romania’s website. I look forward to that as in my opinion Romania is a beautiful country to visit and had been unfairly given negative publicity by those who had migrated to neighbouring countries. Most people we met before we went had the wrong perception and they had not even been to Romania.

Vampire Camping, Bran - Tony and Patrick Patrick

Toni and Patrick were good hosts. However, we had to move on but not before one last photo of Dracula Castle and our next destination was Gilau where we knew that there is a campsite with a fairly good review. We passed Sighisoara which has an attractive old town but unfortunately could not stop as Adrian was asleep. Coruna Koranka is a new town and appears to have grown to join Targu Mores as one town.

Bran Castle

We arrived at Campsite Eldorado pretty early which gave Adrain the opportunity to run around at the playground and we were also glad to note that wifi was available.
