23rd July 2008 - Helsinki to Kuopio, Finland
Wednesday, 23 July 2008 09:55
We said our goodbyes to Pekka, Paula and the kids but as usual we never seem to be able to just pack up and go. Alison wanted to send last minute things to Joanne and check her emails. I took the opportunity to clean up Tuah where it matters while waiting. Brian and Ann who were with a group of British campers stopped by just as I was about to drive off and we chatted for a while. It was encouraging to have people making enquiries in respect of our trip.

The direction to Kuopio was found without having to enter Helsinki and the drive was pleasant thanks to the good roads and polite drivers. We turned off for Camping Rauhalahti before reaching the town and found the ground soft and wet. Apparently it had been raining during the night and morning. We got a dry spot in amongst the campervan and soon made friends with the motor-cross family opposite. Adrian showed them his collection of power rangers and of course a small collection of Moto GP bikes.

Motorcross family Niko

Their 2 sons Attee and Niko, aged 13 and 11 respectively are active motor-crosses and one of the boys had just won a race before coming to Kuopio. Both ride Yamaha 85cc bikes the father is their mechanic. So far they had only raced in Finland but will be going to Holland next month.

Alison was in a bad way with her sinus problem but my offer to take her to hospital was rejected. I stayed up late and went to sleep when I was sure Alison was ok.
