24th July 2008 - Kuopio to Puolanka, Finland

When I got up at 10 am, Alison was in a better state after having been to the sauna early in the morning, thank God! I got the future motor-cross champions to pose for pictures with Adrian before parting company.

After leaving the campsite we went to Kuopio town in search of a local delicacy “kala kukko”, loaf with fish stuffing, at the market square. I was sorely disappointed as the stuffing was not entirely fish but mixed with pork. There was none with only fish stuffing. We ended up with a box of deep fried fish the size of “sepat” instead. Well it was not exactly a local delicacy but a Finnish dish anyway.

Adrian wasn’t bothered as he had his eyes on the jumping thingy. He was on it before I could object. We had our lunch of deep fried fish by the harbour and it was then time to proceed north. It was a pity that we couldn’t stay longer, as Kuopio seemed to be a place where one could relax and enjoy the lakes and forests.

As we had driven quite a distance we decided to stop for the night at Puolanka. There are 330 campsites in Finland and finding one in Puolanka was not a surprise. We found it without any trouble and campsite Puolanka Jarvi, although comparatively small has all the facilities with friendly staff. Situated on a lake and it was ideal for Adrian who had fun the previous day in the lake at Kuopio.

We were saddened by the news that Mak Chah, the last of my auntie on my Father’s side had passed away this afternoon. May Allah bless her soul!
