| 1st July 2009; Smith Mountain Lakes to Morrow Mountain Park |
|
At 8am there was a knock on the side of Tuah and there stood the Park Police, asking us the same question as the Ranger asked us last night, what were we doing perched up on the tent area? Alison started to explain and I just told her to apologise profusely for the misunderstanding and that we were moving on in any case. With that the policeman went away with our name jotted in his book to sort out the ranger on duty when we checked in, most probably. We took our time in getting ready to leave and Alison cooked me a big breakfast of sausages and fried eggs. It was decided that we took Adrian to the beach front on the lakes to see if he would like to go for a dip in the water. Of course he would and neither of us had our swimming gear handy. Actually I did have a brief which could be used for swimming but had been using it as pyjamas and Alison forgot that I could get it out in a matter of seconds. All the same she was moaning that it was too hot to go out in the sun to watch out for Adrian. I silently rolled up my trousers and all of a sudden it was not too hot for her to follow us down the beach. Damn woman.....! By 12pm we got Adrian out of the water purely because other children were asked to go for their lunch. Alison bathed him and he was quite happy to leave. When I stopped to get diesel, Adrian asked Alison for the last doughnut bought yesterday and it was supposed to be mine. He agreed to share it with me but by the time I finished filling up he had scoffed the lot without Alison even realising it. He loves doughnuts!!! I was glad too that we let him loose n the lakes to enjoy himself. Alison was looking for cracker bread and could only get it at Food Lion, a supermarket chain in Virginia. We found one and stopped but she couldn't get it at the particular store but managed to get chicken packed in small enough packages. Looked like I was going to get chicken curry tonight great....! The GPS got us directly to Morrow Mountain Park and as we drove into the campsite area we spotted a few deer around, the first large size animals we had seen in a campsite. Of course we had been warned in various ways of the existence of bears in the national Parks, but had not spotted any. The only time there was some concern was at the Jigger Johnson campsite when Alison found that the bottom of the plastic bag she was using for garbage had been clawed open. We didn't know what did it but it could have been wild dogs! We went looking for the campsite host but couldn't find him. It turned out to be a her when she finally turned up to collect the fees for camping and the best part was the entitlement of 33% discount I had being a senior citizen and we only paid USD10 for the night. By 8pm we were all fed, I with chicken curry which tasted delicious, and had a fire going. Alison went to work on Adrian journals while I had to wind up the tent. By 9.30pm Adrian was asking to go up to the tent and my thoughts about preparing my journal while they were asleep soon when by the wayside as it was eerie with all the jungle noises around and pitch black with no other tents nearby. I decided to go to bed as well!
