12th July 2009; Visit to Florida Keys and Key West, Florida

Susie asked us to stay a few days so that we could take a rest today and go to Key West tomorrow. But as we were undecided and the weather was good, we decided to do Key West today and were ready to leave by 11.00am. As I switched on the GPS it indicted an arrival time of 2.30pm. Wow, I thought to myself that's to be a long drive and hoping that I wouldn't fall asleep at the wheel. As it turned out we mad ea few stops on the way, McDonalds for Adrian's nuggets, and a sandals outlets in Key Largo, where I was chuffed to bits knowing that I had a bargain on my Teva sandals bought in Orlando. Well as they say you win some and loose some!

We also stopped at a lay-by where Adrian got a treat to wade in the water, but Alison who pulled a nerve wile sat at the back was not too pleased when he got his shirt and pants wet. We passed a township called Islamorada (which we were told pronounced as Al Morada, wonder why?) and the biggest town midway called Marathon. Marathon has an airport capable of landing a 737 by the looks of the plane on the ground.

Soon we were at Key West and instead of going toward the town we went left towards a public beach that Susie knows very aptly named Rest Beach. It was a beautiful beach with palm trees (very unlike the famous Daytona Beach), and not crowded at all for a Sunday. We stayed on the beach for an hour enjoying the breeze, me cuci mata at the same time before we left for the old town.

Of course we took photos at the Southernmost point with Cuba within swimming distance 90 miles to the South East. Mind you, if I was Cuban I would rather go on a raft or perhaps a surf board! After that it was time for food and ate we did. I suggested that we had entrées only knowing from experience if we ordered too much we wouldn't be able to finish our food. We had chicken drumstick done buffalo style, mussels and conch fritters, all of which tasted delicious and between the three of us finished off Adrian's macaroni cheese.

When we left the restaurant it was7pm and while Alison and Susie walked the main street of the Old Town I decided to return back to the car as my stomach was a little uncomfortable after the meal. We had to go to “0” mile of the US Interstate 1 and took photos of Tuah and of Ernest Hemingway residence as we passed it. We finally left Key West at 8.00pm and arrived back at Susie's at 11.40pm with me amazed at my self not feeling sleepy at all. Read more about Florida Keys here.
