8th June 2008 - Andorra to Montpellier, France
Sunday, 08 June 2008 11:44

I felt a lot better than last night after almost 10 hours sleep. We had a cooked breakfast and were ready to leave by 11.30 am. Surprisingly, after driving around, Andorra La Vella is a fairly large town and all the shops were opened although it was a Sunday. Andorra is all about skiing and duty free shopping. I took advantage of it to refuel but wished that our tank was empty. I can’t help thinking on leaving why anyone would want to live in the valley surrounded by rocks and gale force winds slicing through your skin though.

I have to admit that the views offered were unmatched. Winter visit could be worthwhile although the drive would be rather longish from the nearest airport in France or Spain (Andorra doesn’t have one). I decided to veer off the main road and lucky for Adrian 1.5 km down we stumbled on to the skiing area Grau Roig, where there were still patches of snow about. Adrian had a great time although not dressed for the occasion, especially for building snowman.

We managed to persuade Adrian to leave and 2 km from the French border there was this last chance shopping town full of French shoppers. It reminded me of the days when Johorians ran across to Singapore to get their shopping done. Crossing into France was no problem Andorra being a member of EU but the French Duane couldn’t believe his ears when we said we didn’t buy any grog or fags.

As always we took the non-toll roads and this time the D613 which offered magnificent views. The temperature which had risen from 3 C at Grau Roig to 15 C went back down to 8 C. We passed a town called Esperaza which reminded me of Razak and Esperanza on the D118. It wasn’t until Beziers that the temperature rose to 19 C but it was blowing a gale when we stopped for Adrian’s McDonalds. Our attempt to use the wifi was not very successful and we finally stopped for the night at Les Berges Du Canal, in Villaneau Beziers arriving at 8.30 pm.
