I was keen to get going but Adrian as usual woke up late and by the time everyone was ready, we managed only to catch the 11.00 am boat into Venice. While waiting I saw this large blue hull passing by and only then realized how close ships were passing us at the campsite. The lights we saw and thought were for aircraft landing last night, are channel markers.
Mum reminded me that it was Father’s Day with her SMS, but I didn’t think I was going to get any special treatment today. It was unbelievable for us to actually be in Venice but apart from St Mark’s Square and the gondolas (which is a rip off) there is nothing much there. It is definitely different from other cities and the atmosphere was exciting, but it was probably the James Bond movies that made it so!!! To see the cruise ships moored near the city brought back memories of my seagoing days.
We met these two elderly Irish ladies who took a shine to Adrian and one even got up to play ball with him. After our packed lunch and ice cream treats, we thought that we could take a gondola or ferry back to the Zattere and was disgusted with the charges quoted by the gondola operators - €200 for 6 people (where the hell were we going to get the other 4 adults). The ferry was not much better – 5 minutes on the boat and €13 later we arrived at Zattere and we had entertainment at the terminal – no charge.
The boat back to Fusina took 20 minutes or so and on landing we were surprised to see that the jetty area was full of sunbathers and some topless !!! heheyhey!. I was tempted to take some photos but I could get my camera smashed in the process and decided against it. |
