When we woke up at 8 am everyone seemed to be about ready to leave the campsite and in a hurry too. The colourful French van next to us is apparently the back up vehicle for 3 cyclists (a German and 2 Frenchmen) attempting to ride from Normandie to China in 70 days. They had been on the road for 12 days and had done 1900 kms. After a good chat, hearing some useful information about Ethiopia and promises to get both our websites linked, the cyclists left while we were still packing. Oh one more thing, their van driver is 72 and cook 78, so one is never too old!
Leaving at 11.15 am our first stop was the pekara where we got the bread the previous evening. The road to Tuzla was found easily but it took us an hour just to clear Sarajevo as the traffic was held up due to drivers not wanting to give way to joining traffic. We took the opportunity to snap some photos of Sarajevo while stationery. 25 kms out, we chanced upon this great restaurant, Imidz –T- , serving excellent grilled fresh trout at reasonable prices too.
With tummy full we left the restaurant at 2.45 pm towards Tuzla, Orasje and Zupanja stopping only to take photos of the sunflowers in full bloom which we had missed the previous week while in Croatia. The North and Eastern part of Bosnia is scenic with attractive small villages in the valleys and very unlike the rest of the country. We could have spent a couple of days relaxing had we had time. Crossing the border into Croatia was quick and as we could not locate the campsite in Zupanja, decided to move forward towards Osijek via Vinkovci, Vukovar, Borovo and Eridut.. At the small border town of Eridut we attempted to get into Serbia without visa. We could have been successful had we got our UK resident permit stamped in our passports. Unfortunately the passports are with the Home Office in the UK. The authorities were friendly and willing to assist unlike those at the Montenegro border. There was no choice but to carry on to Osijek where we found McD and gave Adrian a treat since he had been deprived for more than a week. Hotels were too expensive at €80 and we decided to drive on. We stumbled on to a campsite alongside river Drava in Osijek and although there was a concert (rock and heavy metal) going on, we parked and slept in Tuah as Alison was not happy for me to put up the tent. The site is not a regular campsite that we have been accustomed to but an open ground where anyone is allowed to set up camp.
