One thing I can confirm about the Americans is the fact that they want to do things differently to everyone else. For instant the language, the spelling as been changed from the original English. Never have I seen toilets without doors, or at least half doors. In the last campsite they only had curtains to cover ones modesty. The funny thing was that they had doors and curtains in the showers!!!!
Anyway we woke up to rain early in the morning which gave us an excuse to lie in. Eventually the rain stopped at about 9am but the ground was wet. I got Adrian to play in a dry covered area and went for my shower only to hear Alison complaining about me taking the toiletries with me. Well, she promised to get me my own toiletry bag, only God knows when that will be?
Breakfast was just a simple bowl of cereals after which we were ready to set off at 10.30am. We headed for Washington DC centre which was going to take us just under 3 hours. Just as we entered the City Alison asked me to stop for nuggets for Adrian and we eventually decided to eat at McD. We proceeded into the city and got the GPS to give directions to the White House, and went round in circles for a while due to closed roads etc. Finally the GPS on the H West which passes the Lafayette park in front of the White House.
On the second time that we went round on Constitution Ave we managed to find a parking bay but I needed the toilets. While waiting for me Alison managed to snap a few photos but soon after we saw police everywhere asking people to leave the park. One policeman advised s to drive off while we could before they closed the road entirely. Apparently, a strange looking vehicle, not ours, had been spotted and as a precaution the police were investigating.
We then decide to find a camping ground for the night and the GPS took us initially to a shop selling camping equipment and the next place was just a block of flats. With that I told Alison that the brochure we got from the last campsite was correct in claiming that it was the nearest campsite to Washington and the charges reflected the claim at USD45 per day. We decided to find a hotel instead and our favourite, Days Inn sowed up on the GPS screen with a few others. We discovered that a B&B could be more expensive, the one we found charges USD159 for two persons, and settled for Days Inn with a 10% discount for AA membership.
Unfortunately for Adrian the TV didn't work because they were changing from analogue to digital and I read in the papers that today was D Day. We walked down the road for KFC and saw that Taco Bell must have been merged with KFC as the former products was also being sold. We hope to get an early start in the morning and see the sights we needed to see and be out of Washington DC before the money runs out!!! |
