Today, I got up pretty late at 11am due to watching football on TV and the best part was that the matches were old ones of Barcelona. I didn't realise until I noticed the date on the screen indicating 2008. As soon as I got up I was made to realise that Alison had been working hard getting the laundry done and if it was meant to make feel guilty, I wasn't! By 12.30 pm we were ready to go out to Lancaster where I was told that one could get a glimpse of the Amish way of life. The Amish, being a religious sect do not believe in the luxuries of modern day life and most of all they believe in equality. They shun electricity, due to the fear that it will influence the community to other aspect of life that is unwanted. We arrived at the village called Bird In Hand which was supposed to be the centre of the Amish community but saw nothing to indicate that it was. There was a junk market selling all sorts of stuff which did not interest me, including an old banger of a car! There were some lovely new houses though with extensive gardens overlooking the valley beyond. We then decided to go back up the road where we had spotted a bakery and some craft shops. Unfortunately there was nothing much in the craft shop either, which was a disappointment. The next stop was a furniture store where we saw some fine looking furniture and they were built by the Amish. We got talking to the store manager who answered most of our questions regarding the Amish way of life as he had been living amongst them for 57 years. Apparently he has an Amish furniture maker who parks a truck in his compound and get him to drive it whenever he needs to deliver stuff. It is acceptable to utilise the truck but not to own one, that's equality for you!!! We then proceeded to the village of INTERCOURSE, yes that the name and there is no mistake about it. There we found some shops selling quilts, leather goods and various other things which we couldn't afford to buy because of space in Tuah and of course funds. The quilts didn't come cheap either as a queen size one would cost USD800 or so. By 6pm we were heading for Ridley Park and the GPS took us on a different route back, and gave us the opportunity to see some lovely residences along Providence Ave. We were back at Sharon's by 7.30pm and the first thing I did was to locate the nearest Days Inn which was only 3 miles away near the airport. Fortunately I looked it up as it was cheaper than the one in Philadelphia by USD20. I had left over nasi lemak for dinner which went down very well but there wasn't enough to share with Alison. She had to settle for second best, maggie mee which is one of her favourite in any case!! Tonight I was determined not to let the TV keep me awake and went to sleep fairly early after browsing through the guide book on New York, which was another surprise!!! One needed to get a ferry to go to the Statue of Liberty!!
