11th June 2009: Norfolk VA to Cambridge MD

I thought this morning I would wake up early to start packing the car up but went back to sleep after waking up at 6am. The next thing I know was Alison scurrying up and down and it was already 8.15am. She persuaded me to get up and shower by saying that she couldn’t proceed any more until I have stored my medication in the pocket above the rear wheel arches.

I figured that I may as well air the tent up while we have breakfast at the same time making sure that the mechanism still work after one month. I was quite happy to see the tent rising and the mustiness was not as bad as I expected. After breakfast we continued packing Tuah up and eventually left with all my stuff loose which we packed in a small duffle bag and dumped it in Tuah.

I gave the opportunity for Alison to let loose with her thoughts on Days Inn, Shore Drive, Norfolk in a survey request which was sent to me. In the meantime I checked out with the ogre of a lady behind the reception counter. But she was nice to me though!

We left the hotel at 11.10 am with mileage reading of 66378 after having done 28 miles yesterday, heading for Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel. To see this engineering feat was one of my targeted sights after seeing it in movies etc. The Bridge tunnel itself is 17.6 miles long with approaches to it another 5 miles. About five miles form the Norfolk side there is a reat area with a restaurant and souvenir shop. Although the bridge itself is dual carriageway, the tunnels are however single lane.

Our next destination is the Great Machipongo Clam Shack26 miles North f the Bridge. Alison had the coordinates  in the GPS and we were confident to find it without any problems and that was until we found ourselves in the middle of a field. After calling the restaurant again we found it alongside the Highway 13.apparently the coordinates given was for the place before they moved, but in the middle of a field???

I chose soup of the day which was lobster bisque and fish and chips while Alison asked for crab cake. The soup was delicious and the portion was quite large. Thank God Adrian liked the fish and he ate most of it. Soon enough it was time to drive on as we headed for Cambridge and depending on the time Washington DC.

While still quite far away from Cambridge Alison started looking for campsites but most of them would take us away from our route. We decided to go to Cambridge and look for campsite when we got there which was a big mistake. It is such a small place and everything was shutting or already shut.  We had to backtrack 27 miles before we found the Wooodlawn Camp Ground at Delmar which charged USD22 for us to camp, wasn’t cheap!! We go to the campsite at 6pm.

As we had a big lunch and not too hungry we settled on toasted cheese sandwich for dinner. I contemplated on how much lasix to take and ended up with a suggestion to have a bucket with a hose leading from the tent. Alison asked where we were going to carry the bucket if we had one and my reply was under my feet. We laughed at that because I then said to Adrian that his mother wanted me to kick the bucket!!

Unfortunately the day ended with Adrian crying wanting to watch a DVD and Alison not letting him because he was not listening to her or me for that matter, and he was being punished for that. As I write this entry I am being bitten all over my mosquitoes, didn’t know that they exist here!!!
