20th May 2008 - Azrou, Morocco
Tuesday, 20 May 2008 00:00

Steve decided to come with us for today's outing although he had pipes leaking in the bathroom and the hot water pressure needed to be raised. I had to wait 20 minutes before I could take a shower and even then the water was hardly hot enough. This is camping remember!!!

Azou's Tuesday Souk Popcorn anyone but wait what are these two up to on the right

Our first stop was the souk in Azrou and it was a sight for sore eyes indeed. This massive area with the mountains in the background was just covered with tents and awnings with everything imaginable being traded, even popcorn. Unfortunately we came a bit late for the livestock trading but some animals were still there. One stall owner offered Adrian an apricot but to his dismay, Adrian discovered nothing is for free. He had to trade in his hat!!!

We headed towards Meknes and stopped at Panaromic Ito or the Valley of the Moon as Steve recalled from his childhood days.

Apparently King Mohammed VI has a ranch in the valleys. Lunch was at Mochfrane, a town we spotted the night we came into Azrou with a stretch buthers on one side of the road. One needs to get the terms agreed before deciding to eat as otherwise the bill cannot be argued upon at the end of the meal. Our 1 kg of beef was 80 DHs.

Adrian entertained while we ate - nevermind what's hanging above him

One of the cooks had a good time with Adrian. Of course Adrian had to have an ice cream after spotting the freezer at the next shop manned by the future Ito, a happy looking kid, of Morocco.

The future Ito - selling ice cream Volubilis Roman ruins entrance

We arrived at Volubilis finally and to our surprise the entrance fee was only 10Dhs each. After all the running around during lunch Adrian decided that he wasn't going to walk and yours truly had to carry him for a bit until he saw that he could have fun climbing the stones in the ruins.

I am not going any furthet unless someone carries me

On the rocks in Volubilis Rock climbing, anyone

The Romans knew how to choose a good spot, not only for the view but anyone, especially unwanted characters, approaching the city could be spotted miles before he gets anywhere near it.

With Steve there, it was an opportunity for the three of us to be photographed together. The only negative incident of the day was when we had to pay 10 DHs for Adrian 's ice cream knowing very well that it normally cost 3. Well we should have checked the price before opening the wrappers, shouldn't we? A lesson learnt.

Moulay Idriss

We did not have time to stop at Moullay Idriss which can be seen from Volubilis but it could be an interesting town to visit. By the time we got to Ifrane it was already dark but we should look at it tomorrow on the way out to the desert.
