22nd November 2008 - Pompeii to Bari

At 1000hrs with mileage of 48701 we set off for Bari having decided that we needed to catch up for time although missing out on scicily. The weather wasn't too hot either, piddling down with rain all night long and so unsettled throughout most of the days. We hoped that the ferry to cross over to Albania or Greece would be readily available.

38 miles later we were stuck in a traffic stand still due to an accident on the highway for about 40 minutes although it seemed longer than that especially when we were looking forward to Bari and what lay ahead. We passed the town of Avellino which seemed more modern and better represented than the rest of Italy.

When we got to Bari, we headed for the docks immediately and found the terminal for Albania and Montenegro. The earliest feeries were for 2300hrs and price ranges from 235 Euros to 295 Euros. When enquired about the ferry to Greece one of the girls told me that it was at a different terminal furhter on. We found the terminal and at the first desk I made enquiries to I was told that they had a package to take us to Igoumenitsa for 170 Euros all inclusive and the ship was already loading trucks scheduled for departure at 1700hrs. I didn't hesitate and purchased the ticket without knowing where Igoumenitsa was!

We were on board the Ionian King which departed from Bari at 1700hrs as scheduled with mileage of 48876. The thought then struck me to find out if Doug was in Greece and it would be nice to give him a  visit if he was. As it turned out he was and offered us aberth if we were driving across Greece. He also offered to find out if there was any ferries crossing to Syria or Port Said which gave zero results.

We had dinner at the cafeteria with all the burly truck drivers and only after dinner did we find out that there was an ala-carte restaurant next to the cafeteria. We had coffee afterwards which costed a bomb at 3.50 Euros each and in a paper cup at that!  Alison saw that there was wifi and on enquiry at the reception desk it was affirmed and I then had to go down the hold to get our laptop, but not after a half hour wait. The cost of the internet connection was a whopping 8 Euros per hour. We turned in early as we would have to get up at 0330hrs Italian time which was one hour behind the Greek time.
