Sept 7; Vilanje to Bled, Slovania

We thought we could make an early start as it was going to be a long drive to Innsbruck, via Ljubljana We got off the campsite at Vilanje early enough and made it to Ljubljana by 12 pm. As we came into the city the most prominent building

was the castle perched on a hill. The sign to the city centre was ignored and we headed towards the castle instead where we passed the old town with market stalls set up for the tourists.

As we were not into shopping we found a parking bay just at the foot of the hill to the castle where a funicular railway was operating. The castle was pretty impressive but we had to pay an additional €2 each to go up the main tower. It was such a con job as we were told that payment for the funicular railway included entry to the castle. Well, that’s life I suppose.

Adrian had a good time playing with an instrumental box placed in the middle of the square, while Alison wrote the postcards to the two grandmas. Thereafter we went down had our lunch and drove around the town to see what else there was to see. We ended up in front of the railway station which was rather dismal.

It was time to press on towards Innsbruck when Alison who was driving wanted to know if she should turn into Bled which I agreed. We drove straight to Bled castle which was more impressive than that in Ljubljana but didn’t go into the castle as the charges was rather exorbitant and Adrian had to pay too. What we saw from the hilltop was sufficient to get me wondering if we should stay the night in Bled. I convinced Alison that since the weather was sunny, to stay the night and let Adrian play at the campsite. The next day could be raining.

At camping Bled we met up with Robert Haas and family fortunately for us as it rained for a bit after dinner and we were invited to share their tent for shelter. Their kids and Adrian got on fine and so did Tweedy their little dog. When the rain eased off, we bid goodnight and thank them for sharing the tent with us.
