Sept 14; Remagen, Germany

It was so cold that it was difficult to get up and out of the warm sleeping bag. However Alison braved it at 7.30 am because she had some washing in the machine which needed drying. By the time she got back our little pest,

Adrian was waking up and the usual kicking and fiddling around started. No point in trying to get back to sleep once he is awake.

Alison got up first today and I tidied up the tent instead. We almost didn’t make the opening time for the gate and just got out at 10 minutes before 12 pm. We took the B9 towards Koln which gave us a good view of the Rhein and the surrounding sights. It was fascinating to see the Rhein barges going up and down the river.

When we got to Koln we managed to find a parking bay after going around for half hour or so. The Der Kolner Dom was being restored but we had a pretty good view of it. The Synagogue and Jewish old town where the excavation work was going on until 2011, had too many people queuing so I managed to see it through the glass window from outside. There was nothing much to see in any case.

We went by the river and had a look at what the Germans do on a sunny day which was lazing around fully clothes as the temperature was only 16 deg C. We took the route back through Bonn, passing some lovely big houses in a forested area. Just outside Bonn we got stopped by a police car and the policeman who spoke to us turned out to have been raised in Australia. We didn’t do anything wrong as it turned out but they wanted to know if we needed help to find our way.

On reaching the campsite we went for a walk along the Rhein but half the time we were so worried about Adrian running out into the path of bicycles that Alison was so stressed. I just laughed it off whenever Alison lost her cool as there was no use in the two of us getting angry.

Tonight Alison made satay but the grill that she bought didn’t work, and she ended frying them in the pan. At least she attempted to do something for a change in our diet. I just hope that tonight we will be able to sleep better as it shouldn’t be as cold as last night.
